Hey everyone, I’ve been looking into NFTs lately and found out something interesting. I thought the actual image files were stored on the blockchain, but that’s not the case. Can someone explain how this works? Where are the images kept if not on the blockchain itself? I’m curious about the technical details and why it’s set up this way. Also, does this affect the value or ownership of NFTs in any way? Thanks for any info you can share!
nah, images arent stored on the blockchain; the chain holds metadata and links only. theyre usually on ipfs or normal servers. if servers go down, thats why ipfs is prefered, but it doesn’t mess with ownership much. never tried buyin mine, but sometimes ppl cash in.
You’re right, the actual image files aren’t stored on the blockchain. This is mainly due to size and cost constraints. Blockchains are designed for small data transactions, not large file storage.
Instead, NFTs typically use a system called ‘off-chain storage’. The image is hosted elsewhere, often on IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) or centralized servers, and the blockchain stores a unique identifier or URL pointing to that location.
This setup does introduce some risks. If the off-chain storage fails, the NFT could lose its associated image. However, the ownership record on the blockchain remains intact. Some projects are working on more robust storage solutions to mitigate these risks.
Regarding value, while the image isn’t on-chain, the scarcity and provable ownership of NFTs still drive their market. It’s a complex topic with ongoing debates in the crypto community.
hey ava, that’s a great question! i’ve been wondering about that too. from what i understand, the blockchain only stores a link or reference to where the image is actually kept, not the image itself. i think it’s usually on regular servers or decentralized storage networks? but i’m not totally sure
does anyone know if this setup causes any issues? like what happens if the server with the image goes down? would love to hear from folks who know more about the technical side of things. it’d be interesting to learn how this impacts nft ownership and value too
btw has anyone here actually bought or sold nfts? what was your experience like? i’m kinda curious but also a bit nervous about jumping in
