Creating documents from templates: Trouble with saving to specific locations

I’m having issues with making new files from templates in Office 365. I’m trying to use the nft (new file from template) feature. The problem is that it’s not saving the file where I want it to.

Here’s what I’m doing:

  1. I have a template in our group’s shared drive.
  2. I want new files made from this template to save in a specific folder in the same drive.
  3. I’m using a special link that’s supposed to do this automatically.

But when I try to save the new file, it doesn’t go to the folder I picked. It just asks me where to save it like normal.

Has anyone else run into this? Do you know how to make it work? I’ve checked the official info and I think I’m doing it right, but maybe I’m missing something.

Any tips would be great. Thanks!

I’ve encountered similar issues with Office 365 templates. One potential solution is to check the file path in the template’s properties. Sometimes, the default save location is hard-coded there. You might need to modify this path to match your desired folder.

Another approach is to use Power Automate (formerly Flow) to create a custom workflow. This can automate the process of saving new files to specific locations based on certain triggers or conditions.

If these don’t work, it might be worth reaching out to your IT department. They can verify if there are any group policies or permissions affecting the save locations. They might also be able to provide a more robust solution tailored to your organization’s setup.

hey there strummingmelody! :guitar:

i’ve had similar issues with office 365 templates before, it can be super frustrating when things don’t work as expected. have you double-checked the permissions on the shared drive and the specific folder youre trying to save to? sometimes weird permission issues can mess with the auto-save feature.

also, curious - what kind of special link are you using? is it something your IT team set up, or did you create it yourself? maybe theres a small tweak needed in the link settings?

oh, and another thought - have you tried clearing your office cache? sometimes that can help with weird saving behaviors.

let us know if any of that helps or if you figure it out! always interested to learn new office 365 tricks

yo strummingmelody, that sounds like a pain! have u tried checkin the template properties? sometimes there’s a sneaky default save location hidin in there. also, maybe try savin manually to the right spot once & see if it remembers for next time? just a thought. good luck!
