Hey everyone! I managed to save around $1000 from working this summer and I’m thinking about getting into cryptocurrency investments. I live in Canada and this would be my first time investing in digital assets.
• Any recommendations on which cryptocurrencies might be good for beginners?
• What trading platforms work well for Canadians with low fees?
• Is it better to put everything in Bitcoin or diversify across multiple coins?
I’m planning to hold for the long term rather than doing quick trades. Would really appreciate some guidance from experienced investors here!
Good call starting with crypto at your age. Since you’re planning to hold long-term, I’d put max 70% of that $1000 in initially - crypto can stay down way longer than you’d expect and you don’t want everything locked up. For exchanges in Canada, Newton’s been decent for me with lower fees on small buys, though their support gets swamped when things get busy. For splitting it up, go heavy on Bitcoin - maybe 60-70% of whatever you put in crypto - then Ethereum for the rest. Don’t get sucked into chasing random altcoins until you’ve watched how Bitcoin and ETH move through a few market cycles. Biggest thing I learned: crypto doesn’t move like regular investments, so you need serious patience when everything tanks.
That’s awesome! Using summer earnings for crypto is a smart move
Quick reality check though - what if the market crashes right after you buy in? Would losing 30-50% of that $1000 mess up other plans or stress you out?
What got you into crypto? Success stories or just think it’s the future? Always curious about what sparks people’s interest.
You mentioned long-term holding (which is smart) - but how long? 1 year? 5 years? Until graduation? Your timeline changes everything strategy-wise.
Have you checked Canadian tax rules yet? I know people who got blindsided by taxes later. Worth understanding upfront.
What’s your gut saying? Sometimes intuition matters more than we realize.
congrats on saving that much! I’d start with $200-300 to get ur feet wet. crypto’s super volatile and u don’t wanna blow everything on ur first try. Coinsquare or Bitbuy work great for Canadians but def do ur homework first.
