Need advice on getting into cryptocurrency trading

Hope this is the right place to ask this question!

I want to start putting money into crypto, specifically looking at XRP because I think it might blow up like bitcoin did. Planning to invest around 50k but only using money I can afford to lose from my entertainment budget.

What are the top platforms or exchanges for purchasing and storing cryptocurrency? I keep hearing people recommend hardware wallets to protect against theft, but those cost about 25% of what I want to invest initially. My plan is to treat this like a retirement account - invest and forget about it for years. I’m located in Canada if that matters, since I know some exchanges don’t work in certain countries.

Any tips would be awesome!

Wow, jumping straight into the deep end with 50k! That’s pretty bold for a first timer. I’m curious though - what made you zero in on XRP specifically? Have you looked into the whole SEC situation that’s been going on with Ripple?

Just wondering if you’ve considered maybe starting smaller to get a feel for how volatile this space can be? Like maybe put in 5-10k first and see how you handle watching it swing up and down 20% in a day lol. The crypto market can be pretty wild emotionally even when you think you’re prepared.

Also curious about your timeline - when you say “years” are we talking like 5+ years or more like 2-3? Because that might change the strategy a bit. And have you thought about diversifying across a few different coins instead of going all in on one?

Btw hardware wallets don’t actually cost 25% of 50k - they’re usually around $100-200 CAD max, so more like 0.5% of your investment. Definitely worth it if you’re serious about the long term hold approach!

I’ve used Kraken for three years - solid choice with lower fees and good security. Newton’s decent too, better customer service if things go wrong. About XRP though - do your homework on the regulatory mess first. That SEC case isn’t really settled and there’s still tons of uncertainty. I went heavy on one altcoin early on and got burned. Diversification matters, even in crypto. Instead of dropping 50k at once, consider dollar cost averaging over a few months. Takes the sting out of bad timing. Crypto swings 30-40% fast, and even with money you can lose, watching 50k bounce around gets rough mentally.

check out coinsquare or bitbuy since you’re in canada - both are solid for beginners. going all-in on xrp seems risky tho. i’d split it between btc/eth/xrp instead of betting everything on one coin. also, your hardware wallet math is way off - a ledger nano costs around $150, not 12k lol
