Need guidance on getting started with cryptocurrency and American equities

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to dive into cryptocurrency trading and American stock markets since my job search isn’t going well and I don’t want my savings just sitting there doing nothing. The problem is I have no clue where to begin, which platforms to choose, or how to figure out the right timing for buying and selling digital currencies. I’m completely new to crypto and need some direction on how to get started with investing properly.

I’ve tried using Pluang app which seems okay for cryptocurrency but doesn’t have great options for American stocks since it feels limited.

I do have some experience with Indonesian stocks but I think the long term prospects aren’t great because of economic factors, so I want to learn about US markets instead.

What’s the best way to start understanding American stock markets? How do you guys stay updated on US company news and corporate announcements? Many US stock investors seem to catch trends really early (especially tech stuff) but I always feel behind. Like I just found out about Sana Biotechnology’s diabetes breakthrough about 6 months too late and the stock already went up 300% by then.

Hey! What pushed you away from Indonesian stocks? Currency worries or just weak growth prospects?

For US markets, maybe start with ETFs? You get broad market exposure while learning the ropes. But how are you gonna handle the timezone difference? Trading US hours from Indonesia sounds rough.

That Sana Biotechnology miss must hurt! Ever think about following biotech newsletters or joining discord groups for emerging plays? Some folks swear by r/investing for catching trends early, though I’m not sure how reliable it really is.

What’s your risk tolerance? Day trading or buy-and-hold? And have you looked into the tax implications of US stocks from your location?

One more thing - with the job search struggles, are you thinking of this as potential main income or just growing savings? That’d totally change your strategy.

Interactive Brokers worked great when I switched from local markets to US stocks two years ago. Yeah, the learning curve’s steep at first, but their research tools are solid once you figure out the interface. For staying on top of US market news, I follow SEC filings through EDGAR - you get the raw info before it hits mainstream outlets. Here’s what I learned the hard way: chasing breakout stocks like that Sana Biotechnology example usually means buying at peaks. Focus on fundamentals first - revenue growth, debt ratios, market positioning. I spent six months just paper trading while reading 10-K reports to build pattern recognition. The timing part comes naturally once you understand how earnings cycles and FDA approvals typically mess with biotech valuations. Start small with established companies before jumping into speculative plays.
