Hey everyone! I’m pretty new to hardware wallets but I finally decided to get one for better security. I have some SOL tokens that are currently staked through Solflare wallet and I just received my new Tangem hardware wallet.
I’m wondering what’s the best way to handle this situation. Can I somehow transfer my staked tokens directly to the Tangem wallet without losing the staking rewards? Or do I need to unstake everything first, then move the coins to my hardware wallet, and then stake them again?
I really want to keep earning those staking rewards while also having the extra security that comes with a hardware wallet. Has anyone dealt with this before? What would you recommend as the best approach here?
This is a really interesting question! I’ve been thinking about making a similar move but haven’t pulled the trigger on a hardware wallet yet.
Your staked SOL is locked in the staking contract, not sitting in your wallet. When you say “transfer” the staked tokens, do you mean changing the withdrawal authority for your stake accounts to point to your new Tangem wallet instead of Solflare?
I’m not sure if Tangem supports managing stake accounts directly though. Have you checked if the Tangem wallet interface lets you interact with existing stake accounts? If it doesn’t, you might be stuck with unstake → transfer → restake, which means missing rewards during the unstaking period.
Also wondering - how does Tangem integration work with Solana dApps? Can you connect it to the same staking platforms you were using with Solflare?
Sorry for all the questions but this is exactly what I want to avoid when I eventually switch! Have you tried reaching out to Tangem support directly? They might have specific guidance for migrating staked positions.
tangem can’t handle staked sol transfers directly - you’ll have to unstake first, then transfer everything over. the cooldown period sucks but there’s no way around it. just restake immediately once your sol lands in the tangem wallet so you don’t lose too many rewards during the move.
Did this exact same thing six months ago when I switched from hot wallet to hardware. You can’t transfer staked SOL directly - no way around it. The staking accounts are locked to your current wallet’s keypair, so you can’t migrate them to Tangem while keeping the stake active.
Here’s what I did: timed my unstaking with the epoch schedule to cut down on downtime. Unstaked everything, waited 2-3 days for it to complete, then moved to hardware and restaked right away. You’ll lose some rewards during unstaking but there’s no other option.
Heads up about Tangem - their Solana support works but isn’t as full-featured as other hardware wallets. You can stake through their interface, but check which validators they support and if your preferred staking platform works with it. I ended up connecting Tangem to Phantom as a hardware signer since it gave me way more staking options.
The security boost is totally worth losing a few days of rewards during the switch.
