What motivates people to purchase NFTs?

I hope this doesn’t sound offensive, but I’m really trying to understand what drives people to invest in NFTs. I’ve been looking through various forums and communities, but I still can’t figure out the appeal.

Most of the digital artwork I see appears to be computer-generated content or really basic designs. You know, like random cartoon characters wearing hats and glasses, or simple drawings that look like they took five minutes to make. The whole thing feels empty to me.

It also seems like many creators are just jumping on this trend to make quick cash rather than having any real creative purpose behind their work. While I might not understand why traditional paintings sell for huge amounts either, at least there’s usually some artistic intention there.

I’m not trying to be disrespectful to anyone involved in this space. I’m honestly just curious about what I’m missing here.

From my experience in the NFT space, motivations extend beyond the artwork. Many buyers see NFTs as investments in future utility and community membership. They are purchasing access to what they hope are exclusive clubs rather than merely acquiring digital images. The speculation surrounding NFTs resembles the early days of domain names, with collectors hoping for cultural significance over time. Additionally, supporting digital artists without galleries taking a cut plays a role. Lastly, certain NFTs serve as social signals, reflecting a user’s affiliation with specific communities or technology trends.

thats such an interesting question and i totally get your confusion! i’ve been watching this whole nft thing unfold and honestly the psychology behind it fascinates me.

from what i’ve observed, theres this whole layer of social status that seems to play a huge role - like people want to show they’re “early adopters” or part of some exclusive digital culture. but what really makes me curious is how much of it ties back to our relationship with ownership in general, especially for younger generations who grew up digital-first.

what i find most intriguing though is the community aspect that others mentioned - but do you think people are actually buying into genuine communities, or is it more like buying into the idea of community? because from the outside it sometimes looks like people are paying thousands just to join discord servers they could access for free otherwise.

also, have you noticed how different age groups seem to approach nfts completely differently? like my older friends see it as pure speculation while some younger folks treat it almost like collecting pokemon cards but digital.

what made you start thinking about this btw? did you see something specific that sparked your curiosity or just the general buzz around it?

honestly i think its mostly fomo and the idea of getting rich quick. saw too many ppl buy into hype thinking theyd flip for profit but got burned when the bubble popped. some genuinely believe in digital ownership concept tho
