I’m curious about the fate of those blockchain games that were everywhere a few years back. Remember when everyone was talking about play-to-earn gaming? I’m trying to track down what happened to some of the big names from that era.
Games like Axie Infinity, CryptoBlades, and various MMORPG-style NFT projects that major exchanges were pushing. Some had names I can’t even recall now, but they were getting massive attention and investment.
Are any of these projects still active? Have they pivoted or shut down completely? I’m looking for current information about their development status, player bases, and whether they’re still maintaining their original roadmaps. Any insights or updates would be helpful since it’s hard to find recent news about most of them.
axie’s still around but it’s dead compared to the 2021 hype. most crypto mmorpgs just disappeared - remember defi kingdoms? massive for 6 months then gone. crypto winter killed everything when people figured out grinding for pennies wasn’t worth it.
Oh wow, this brings back memories! I was deep into NFT gaming back then - what a wild ride watching it all unfold.
Axie Infinity’s probably the best case study here. Still around, but what a rollercoaster. The Ronin bridge hack really shook things up, and their player base tanked from those crazy peak days when people in the Philippines were making actual livings. They’ve been rebuilding though - just launched Axie Infinity: Origins which is way more polished than the original.
Cryptoblades… yeah, that one faded. Last I checked they were still technically running but nowhere near the hype levels.
What gets me curious is how many projects now focus on actual gameplay instead of just earning mechanics. Which games caught your attention back then? Were you playing any or just following the space?
Have you noticed how “play to earn” shifted to “play and earn” or even regular gaming with NFT elements? Fascinating how the marketing language evolved as reality set in.
Are you thinking about getting back into these projects or just researching out of curiosity? There are newer blockchain games that learned from those early mistakes and focus way more on fun gameplay first.
